Insulated jackets

An insulated jacket keeps you warm while you move. Synthetic fill or fleece keeps insulating when damp and breathes better than down, so you're less likely to overheat on a climb. Wear it as a mid layer under your rain jacket or as an outer layer on cold, dry days: now that temperatures are dropping, this is the layer you'll reach for most.

Insulated jackets: warmth that moves with you

On a cold morning run or a windy ridge you want to stay warm without feeling clammy after ten minutes. That's what an insulated jacket is made for: lighter than a down jacket, more breathable and still warm when damp.

Synthetic insulation or fleece?

Synthetic insulation, like in the Arc'teryx Atom Hoody, gives plenty of warmth per gram and blocks the wind. Fleece, like the Icebreaker RealFleece or the Arc'teryx Delta, breathes even better and feels soft, but lets more wind through. If you mostly run at pace, go for fleece or a hybrid jacket. If you stop more often or it's windy, choose synthetic insulation.

Mid layer or outer layer

On dry, cold days you wear an insulated jacket as your outer layer. If it starts raining, pull a rain jacket over it: the insulation stays dry and warm. With two layers you're covered for almost any winter weather.

Hybrid jackets for high intensity

Hybrid jackets have insulation on the torso and shoulders and thinner, stretchy panels where you sweat most. They keep your core warm on fast climbs without overheating.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference with a down jacket?
Down is warmer per gram, but insulates poorly when wet and breathes less well. A down jacket is for breaks and standing still, an insulated jacket for when you're moving.

Is an insulated jacket waterproof?
No. The outer fabric blocks wind and a light shower, but in real rain you need a rain jacket.

Does an insulated jacket count as a warm layer for an ultra?
Often it does, but always check your race rules: some organisers set requirements for the warm layer.
