Men's Wind Jackets

The lightest piece of kit with the biggest impact: a wind jacket blocks the cold wind on exposed summits, open polders and long descents, then disappears into your pocket or vest. Breathable enough to keep running in, light enough to always bring along. Now that autumn winds are picking up, this is the layer that keeps you going just that little bit longer.

Men's wind jackets: protection that fits in your pocket

On a hilltop, along the beach or out on open heathland: it's often not the temperature but the wind that chills you down. A wind jacket blocks that wind while letting body heat and sweat escape. Most weigh just a few hundred grams or less and pack down into a pocket of your vest or shorts. In this collection you'll find men's wind jackets and wind vests from brands like NNormal, Dynafit, Fusion and Raidlight.

Wind jacket or rain jacket: which do you need?

A wind jacket is lighter, packs smaller and breathes far better than a rain jacket, so you can keep it on for the whole run without overheating. The trade-off: in a proper downpour you will get wet. If you mostly run in dry, cool weather, a wind jacket is the most comfortable choice. Need to stay truly dry, or does your race require a waterproof jacket? Then go for a men's rain jacket. Most trail runners end up owning both.

What to look for

  • Weight and packed size — the lighter and smaller, the more often you'll actually bring it.
  • Breathability — vents or a thin back panel stop you from overheating on the climbs.
  • Hood — a close-fitting hood keeps your head and ears warm without flapping.
  • Reflectivity — for runs in the darker months, like the Dynafit Trail Reflective Wind Jacket.
  • Jacket or vest — a wind vest like the Fusion S1 Run Vest keeps your core warm and your arms free; a 2-in-1 model with zip-off sleeves gives you both.

The smart piece in your layering system

Over a base layer, a wind jacket gives you enough warmth on cool days. When it gets colder, wear it over a midlayer. With just a few lightweight pieces you can handle almost any weather, no heavy winter coat needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is a wind jacket waterproof?

No. Most wind jackets are water-repellent and will hold off light drizzle for a while, but in real rain you'll get wet. For that you need a rain jacket.

Does a wind jacket count as the mandatory jacket at a trail race?

Usually not. Most races require a waterproof jacket with taped seams. Always check the race rules.

Should I size up?

Only if you often want to wear it over a thicker midlayer. Over a T-shirt or thin long sleeve, your usual size normally fits well. Not sure? Come and try it on in our store on the Maasstraat in Amsterdam.
