In freezing temperatures, strong wind or on a long descent, your head cools down fast. A warm running beanie keeps your ears and forehead warm while still letting sweat escape, so a winter long run stays comfortable even when your pace drops.

When do you choose a warm beanie?

Choose a warm beanie when it's around or below freezing, when the wind is strong, or when you're out for hours and stop now and then. On fresh mornings around 5–10 °C, a thin skull cap or headband is often enough.

Fleece, double layer or windproof?

  • Fleece feels soft, insulates well and dries quickly.
  • Double layer: a snug inner layer wicks moisture while the outer layer holds in the warmth.
  • Windproof panels over your forehead and ears stop the wind from blowing straight through.

Do you sweat easily?

A warm beanie doesn't have to feel stuffy. Go for a close fit and breathable fabric, and take it off on a long climb. It's light enough to stash in your vest pocket.

Wet as well?

In rain or wet snow, a waterproof beanie is the better choice. Pair your beanie with a neck gaiter and gloves for a complete winter setup.
